Since 2010:

The original “OBX” oval design (from the 90s) gained such massive popularity, it eventually became a geographic location code. Dare County started putting “OBX” at the beginning of newly issued residential license plates. Since you cannot trademark a location code, it was game on for people to get creative with the “OBX” letter combo. Even though “OBX” can no longer be trademarked, original artwork can be protected under copyright. The OBX Fish design is protected under copyright, so if you see any imposters please let me know!

Origin:

My best friend’s father was one of the creators of the original OBX oval design. One day he told me the trademark was being revoked due to becoming a location code. He encouraged me to come up with a new design to copyright, so I came up with the OBX Fish!
